Continue reading »]]> The Southern Region would like to welcome Dustin Readenour and Ryan Mitchell into the Venturing leadership family! Dustin will be taking on the reigns of leadership as the 2012-2013 National Venturing President, while Ryan will rise to the position of 2012-2013 Southern Region Venturing President.

Dustin is a senior at Marquette High School in Chesterfield, MO, and plans to attend Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, MO, in the fall for a degree in Business Administration or Human Resources Management. Ryan is a college freshman at Tarrant County Community College in Hurst; he plans to earn his Associates Degree, then transfer to University of Texas at Dallas to earn his Bachelors of Computer Information Technology.

Both Presidents will begin their terms on June 1, 2012. The Southern Region would like to congratulate both officers on their selection and we are looking forward to another great year in the Venturing program through their leadership!

Continue reading »]]> Changes have been made to the Venturing Leadership Award (or VLA) that now opens the award to area, region, and national youth leadership. Previously these level awards were discontinued while only the council level VLA remained.

The award is for youth leadership to be recognized at council, area, regional, and national levels for exceptional contributions made to Venturing. Councils may select ad…ult council VLA’s for this year using the current guidelines if the paperwork has been submitted to them before December 31, 2011. These new standards will become effective on January 1, 2012. For more information, Click on the image of the VLA medals.

Continue reading »]]> Welcome to the totally redesigned website of Southern Region Venturing. This website is owned and operated by the Southern Region Venturing Officers’ Association. Venturers and advisors in the Southern Region have been asking for a site full of up-to-date content and we’ve delivered. The site is completely dynamic and will allow the members of the region VOA to keep you updated on everything happening in the Southern Region as well as provide exceptional resources for your crews and councils.
While the website is still under construction, we didn’t want to delay any longer. Other sections of the site will be added in the next few months including an event section where you can find out about events going on in the region and advertise your own events and a resources section full of handy and helpful things to support you, your crew, and you council.

Along with the new website, we have also setup an official twitter feed which can be found on the right side of this page.

This website may not have much yet but already there is a complete listing of the Region VOA and how the different positions fit together to provide you with a functioning support group and information on the current Region Venturing President as well as  a blog for the Region Venturing President so you can see what he/she is doing and a page for each area that they can make their own complete with sub-pages, blogs, events pages, and anything else they want. If you want to contact any of the people mentioned on this website or have questions, just fill out the contact form on the Contact Us page and we’ll happily direct your questions or comments to the appropriate person and get back to you as soon as possible.  Please don’t hesitate to use this feature as we’re more than happy to receive questions and feedback. We want to hear from you.

We are not just going to have events and resources either; we’re planning to have articles about Venturing that start discussions in the comments section. These articles could be about how to start a successful crew or VOA, how to plan events or hold an officers’ orientation seminar, maybe a piece on uniforms , or articles on various Venturing awards. We want to feature crews and ships and show others what they are doing with Venturing. We would love to publish articles written by Venturers and Venturing advisors throughout the region and country.

Applications have been coming in for months now and the time has come to start filling those positions. It’s not to late though if you’re interested in a position on the your Area or Region VOA, fill out a general interest application online. This post will be updated as the selections and appointments are finalized for the Southern Region and its Areas.

It is with great pleasure that I now announce to you the next Southern Region
Venturing President Josh Nolan. Josh’s term will begin on June 1, 2011 after
being sworn in at the National Annual Meeting. A short bio for Josh is below.
Please join me in welcoming Josh Nolan.

Josh Nolan, from Grayson, Georgia, is a member of Crew 899 in the Northeast Georgia Council. He established the Crew and has served as Crew President. Josh has also been the NEGA Venturing Officer’s Association President for the past two years. He has served as the 2011 Winterfest Venturing Youth Chairman, a consultant and staff member of two Powder Horn Courses, Kodiak Trek Director, National Camp School Staff, Summer Camp Department Director, and is a climbing, trek and whitewater kayaking instructor. Josh has earned the Bronze, Gold, Silver and Venturing Leadership Awards and has completed the Wood Badge course. As a Boy Scout he earned the rank of Eagle and is currently an Assistant Scoutmaster and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Josh attends Gainesville State College where he is majoring in Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis.
