Council Communications
Council Communications
Youth leaders in each Council are encouraged to establish Council Venturing newsletters, and groups on Facebook.
For Facebook groups, the Southern Region VOA makes the following suggestions:
- A disclaimer should be included noting that the group is not officially related to the BSA.
- Nevertheless, all Council Venturing Facebook groups will be guided by the Venturing Oath and Scout Law.
- The group’s wall and discussion board should be monitored regularly by a person assigned that responsibility by the Council VOA.
- Remember that frequent upbeat activity (colorful photographs, opinions and suggestions that are offered in a Scoutlike way, reports and announcements about recent or upcoming events), and steady membership growth are most likely to attract the attention of “browsers.”
- All inquiries should be answered with an invitation or encouragement of some sort to join a Venturing Crew. Often, the VOA President or VP – Admin, the Venturing professional and/or the Council’s adult Advisor should be notified to check the posting and follow-up.
- Complaints and other grousing should also be address by an offline response offered in a polite way. (Put those conflict resolution skills to good use.)
- Post “good stuff” yourself as often as possible: thank-you’s, compliments for great ideas and events, etc.
- Adult Advisor administration should be limited to unavoidable necessity, as all communications tools should be youth directed.
- Adult participation should be welcome, but not intimidate or overwhelm youth participation
